Wetumpka man killed in motorcycle accident

On Wednesday, September 8, a fatal crash occurred with a Wetumpka man.  According to a news release from the Alabama Department of Public Safety, Joseph Eugene Burton, 49 years-old, was traveling two miles north of Wetumpka on Alabama Highway 111.  At approximately 11:05 p.m., Burton lost control of the 2004 Harley Davidson motorcycle he was driving and crashed, resulting in Burton’s death.  Burton did have a helmet on, but it was unable to save his life.  He was transported to Gassett Funeral Home after he was pronounced dead at the scene.  Burton was the only person and vehicle involved in the accident.  The Department of Alabama State Troopers is still investigating this accident.

Wetumpka man faces statutory rape charge

A Wetumpka man is facing a rape charge for an incident that occurred on August 27 at 5 p.m.  Ladarious Eaves, 20, was arrested for allegedly having consensual sex with a 13-year-old female.

According to Deputy Police Chief Anthony Crenshaw, Eaves is facing a charge for second-degree statutory rape.  Even though contact between the two parties is said to be consensual, the victim is underage, and that makes this case a statutory rape case.
Eaves was arrested on September 1 and is being held at Elmore County Jail on a $90,000 bond.

Wetumpka police look for gun, find crack cocaine instead

On Wednesday, September 8 between 1:06 and 1:15 p.m., Willie Arthur Ezell, a 35-year-old black male from Wetumpka was arrested for unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

Deputy of Police Chief Anthony Crenshaw said, “Units were responding to a shots fired call near or around Short Street when they came in contact with this subject. He was very uncooperative and he took off running in a foot pursuit. There was a small struggle, and then the arrest.”

Because Ezell was uncooperative when he was first approached by authorities, he was a possible suspect for the gun shots fired.  After resisting arrest, Wetumpka Police officers did not find a gun on Ezell, but instead, a small amount of crack cocaine was found in his possession.
Ezell is being charged with a class C felony and is being held on bond at the Elmore County Jail.

Wetumpka gets new drivers license office

The Elmore County driver's license examining office is moving, and at least one resident couldn't be more pleased.
The current location of the facility -- handling driving permits, road tests, driver's license transfers and renewals -- is on 101 East Tallassee Street in Wetumpka.

"We've been in that building for a good many years," said Capt. Randy Byrd, Commander for Driver Licensing of Region C, which includes Montgomery, Opelika, Selma, and Tuscaloosa.

Inside the Wetumpka driver's license office, the presence of mold is unmistakable as it covers the back wall and baseboards. Large holes in the back door are covered up with clear packing tape. (Angelique Suzanne, Progress)

Reporter allegedly harassed by New York Jets... have you seen this???

Inez Sainz, a television reporter for a Mexico TV station is claiming she was harrassed and humiliated by the New York Jets.  Sainz was at a practice doing a story on Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez when alleged cat calls, and footballs were intentionally thrown in her direction.  The Jets coach was even in on the "fun" with the reporter.  I watched an interview on Fox News with Meghan Kelly. Here's an article on Fox News about the story.

Sainz posted this picture on Twitter to show exactly how she was dressed, apparently feeling innocent in her choice of attire.  I've never seen a professional reporter dress like this though, have you? (Photo courtesy of nypost.com.  See entire story here: NY Post on Sainz/Jets)

Inspirational 13-year-old honored at Children's Hospital in Birmingham

Daniel Ricketts shows off the picture of the Children's Hospital new building project with a closeup of his name featured on the foundation of the construction.

The Children's Hospital of Alabama chose Daniel Ricketts of Wetumpka to be honored on the "Wall of Inspiration" along with 50 other children at a special ceremony held last month. The ceremony unveiled the first wall with 51 Children’s Hospital patients’ names that were specifically nominated for this honor.

Daniel, 13, is one of the many children from Alabama and Mississippi who have received life saving treatment at Children’s Hospital. When Daniel and his family were invited to this special event, they had no idea who nominated him. “I was one of 51 children chosen out of thousands,” said Daniel. When Daniel and his family were at the reception of the event, they ran into nurses and technicians that Daniel had become friends with while being treated at Children’s Hospital.

“We are on hugging terms with them,” said Judy Denner, Daniel’s Grandmother. Upon talking with a nurse they knew, Daniel and his family said they had no idea who nominated him for the “Wall of Inspiration.” The nurse responded, “Of course you know who nominated you!”

Last October Daniel had brain surgery to do away with his complex partial seizures.

“It’s quite a complex process. We had to be there for five days for a

video EEG to pinpoint exactly where his seizures were coming from,” said Mrs. Denner. Needless to say, the nurses and technicians from the EEG department grew fond of Daniel, and they nominated him to be honored on the wall.

After sitting with Daniel for only five minutes, you can see why he was chosen to be on the wall.

“I like to make people laugh,” said Daniel. “They say it makes you live longer.”

Daniel’s seizures were noticed about three years ago, and while he is not yet 100% seizure-free, he’s getting there.

“He got moved right along in the process and we were fortunate that they wanted to get him fixed. It’s usually a couple of years before anything can be treated. They opened up his skull and put a grid right on his brain to see exactly where the seizures were coming from,” said Mrs. Denner.

“It’s amazing what God can do,” said Daniel.

It is clear that Daniel has been through more than your average 13-year-old. But it doesn’t seem to faze him in the slightest. Daniel enjoys playing his Nintendo Wii, and he also rides horses therapeutically. In fact, he has been riding horses since he was a baby. “My Daddy used to get me up on the horse with him, and the horse would rock me to sleep,” said Daniel. He has also played in the Miracle League, which is an organization in Montgomery that provides the opportunity for special needs children to play baseball.

Upon asking Daniel if there was anything else he’d like to say, he replied, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me…. Philippians 4:13. My Dad used to have that taped to my wheelchair tray.”

“That’s his spirit,” said Mrs. Denner. And truly it is. If every adult had half the strength of Daniel Ricketts, this world would be a better place.
